Concepts
Ideas that structure Chivalry by James Branch Cabell — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Chivalry and Its Code
The book explores chivalry as a rigid, all-encompassing code of conduct requiring a gentleman to serve God, honor, and his lady without reservation, while also revealing the tragicomic melee that results when this ideal clashes with human reality.
Love and Domnei (Lady-Service)
Love is portrayed as the central pivot of women's lives, especially queens, and is often expressed through the courtly tradition of domnei, where love inspires songs, sacrifices, and political maneuvering, yet frequently leads to disillusionment or tragedy.
Power and Queenship
Queens are depicted as playing a high-stakes game of life, where their personal choices in love and politics have vast consequences for nations, and they must act as 'vicars of destiny' while being denied the martial outlets available to kings.
Illusion vs. Reality
The narrative repeatedly contrasts romantic ideals and poetic fictions with the harsh, often squalid realities of war, political betrayal, and personal suffering, as seen in the disillusionment of characters like Osmund Heleigh and Alianora.
Fate and Free Will
Characters grapple with destiny, divine oversight, and the burden of choice, as exemplified by the prologue's assertion that exalted people are 'free to choose' yet must 'justify that choice' under the watchful eye of Heaven.
The Taint of Blood and Heredity
The book suggests a demon-tainted or inhuman lineage in the Plantagenet bloodline, inherited from figures like Manuel of Poictesme, which causes suffering for their wives and England, and culminates in the bloodline's extinction.
Art and the Artist
The role of the artist (troubadour, clerk, maker) is central, as characters like Nicolas de Caen and Osmund Heleigh use songs and stories to shape memory, influence events, and grapple with the gap between their creative ambitions and imperfect execution.
Sacrifice and Suffering
Characters frequently endure physical hardship, emotional torment, and death for love, honor, or political necessity, from Alianora's desperate journey to the martyrdoms and betrayals that punctuate the tales.
