Ben Hur · Question

Why does Ben-Hur hate Messala?

Answer

Judah Ben-Hur hates Messala because childhood friendship becomes Roman betrayal: Messala uses Judah’s household for political advantage, a loose tile or denunciation sends Judah to the galleys, and his mother and sister vanish into disgrace and leprosy. Messala embodies imperial careerism — honor as advancement, not loyalty.

Wallace makes hatred narratively productive — training, wealth, chariot skill — while preparing Christian forgiveness later. Classroom answers should cite the arrest and galley march, not only the race. Messala’s fall is Judah’s imagined justice before divine justice reframes the story.
