Chapter 1
Epigraph

Chapter 2
Ben Hur

Chapter 4
I
Esther and Simonides are on the roof of the restored Hur palace in Jerusalem. Esther receives a letter from Ben-Hur, revealing his love for her and his concern for the Nazarene. Iras arrives, and a tense conversation reveals her disdain for her father Balthasar and her ambition for Rome. Simonides warns Esther that Ben-Hur is ensnared by Iras, but Esther remains devoted to him.
Chapter 5
II
Ben-Hur returns to his father's house and reunites with Amrah, then recounts to Balthasar, Simonides, Esther, and Iras the miracles he has witnessed performed by the Nazarene, including turning water into wine, feeding five thousand, healing the blind and lepers, and raising Lazarus from the dead. The company debates the nature of the Nazarene—whether he is the promised Redeemer or a destined king—and agrees to witness his entry into Jerusalem the next day.
