Balthasar arrives in Antioch with his daughter and his white camel, a gentle old man whose life has been shaped by a night of revelation he can never fully explain. He tells Ben-Hur of a king whose dominion is over souls rather than armies, and his words plant the question that will haunt the young Judean through the rest of the book. Where Ilderim and Simonides read the prophecies as promises of vengeance, Balthasar reads them as promises of love, and the tension between those readings is the story's spiritual spine.
