Holt enters the story as a survivor hauled from an iceberg, a man whose ordeal in the polar wastes makes him both a warning and a clue for everyone aboard. His connection to his brother Ned, lost in the same treacherous waters, gives the voyage a human stake beyond geography and gain. His presence turns abstract ambition into a debt that must be paid, quietly shaping how the crew weighs every mile southward.
