Chapter 1
I: The Kerguelen Islands
The narrator, Mr. Jeorling, describes his stay on the Kerguelen Islands (also called the Desolation Islands) in the southern Indian Ocean, where he has been conducting geological and mineralogical studies. He lodges at the Green Cormorant inn run by Mr. Atkins, and awaits the arrival of the schooner Halbrane, captained by Len Guy, to take him away. Jeorling reflects on the harsh landscape, the wildlife, and his conversations with Atkins about patience and the coming of the ship.
Chapter 2
The Schooner Halbrane
Jeorling learns about the schooner Halbrane from Atkins and later sees it arrive at Christmas Harbour. He attempts to secure passage aboard the ship, but Captain Len Guy is reserved and initially refuses to take passengers. Jeorling receives conflicting promises of help from Atkins and the boatswain Hurliguerly, and ultimately decides to approach the captain directly.
Chapter 3
Captain Len Guy
Jeorling, frustrated by Captain Len Guy's initial refusal to take him as a passenger on the Halbrane, confronts the captain on the quay. Despite a polite but firm rejection, Jeorling's curiosity is piqued by the captain's mysterious demeanor. After several days, Len Guy unexpectedly relents and offers Jeorling passage to Tristan d'Acunha. Jeorling boards the schooner, and the Halbrane departs from Christmas Harbour.
Chapter 4
From the Kerguelen Isles to Prince Edward Island
Captain Len Guy passionately defends the reality of Edgar Poe's narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, claiming to have found a bottle with a letter at Kerguelen and to have sought Dirk Peters in Illinois. Jeorling listens skeptically, considering the captain monomaniacal. The Halbrane sails past Prince Edward Island on August 22.
Chapter 5
Edgar Poe's Romance
Jeorling provides a detailed summary of Edgar Allan Poe's novel 'The Adventures of Arthur Gordon Pym', recounting Pym's early life, his friendship with Augustus Barnard, their disastrous voyage on the Ariel, Pym's secret embarkation on the Grampus, the mutiny led by the cook, the role of Dirk Peters, and the subsequent journey of the Jane towards the Antarctic, including encounters at Tsalal Island.
