Chapter 1
Hunter Quatermain's Story
The chapter introduces Allan Quatermain, Sir Henry Curtis, and Captain Good as they prepare to recount their adventures in Africa. Quatermain arrives at Curtis's Yorkshire home, and the narrative shifts to a hunting story from Quatermain's past, where he and his companions Hans and Mashune face a series of misfortunes, including a grass fire that destroys their wagon and a subsequent struggle for survival in the wilderness.

Chapter 4
The Interest on Ten Shillings
Allan Quatermain, having returned to England after discovering King Solomon's mines, finds civilization stifling and longs for the wilderness. He recounts a past adventure at Pilgrims' Rest in the Transvaal, where he invested his savings in a gold claim that turned out to be nearly worked out. After months of fruitless labor, he and his son Harry are down to their last fourteen shillings and ninepence. In a moment of frustration, Quatermain drops a half-sovereign into the claim; while searching for it, they discover a large gold nugget, changing their fortunes.
Chapter 5
What Was Found in the Pool
After a lioness kills Jim-Jim, Quatermain and Harry search for him but find only blood. They discover the lioness sleeping by the pool, and Quatermain shoots her. The chapter also recounts the earlier lion attack, the oxen's illness, and the camp's tense night.
