Concepts
Ideas that structure A Treatise of Human Nature by David Hume — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Empiricism and the Primacy of Impressions
The book establishes that all knowledge originates from sensory impressions, with ideas being faint copies of these impressions, forming the foundation of human understanding.
Association of Ideas
The mind connects ideas through resemblance, contiguity, and causation, which governs the flow of thought and underpins both reasoning and the passions.
Passions and the Self
Pride, humility, love, and hatred are analyzed as passions directed at the self or others, driven by the double relation of impressions and ideas.
Sympathy and Social Influence
Sympathy allows the passions and opinions of others to affect our own, shaping our self-evaluation, reputation, and moral sentiments through social connection.
Artificial Virtues and Justice
Justice is presented as an artificial virtue, arising from human conventions and self-interest rather than natural instinct, to stabilize property and society.
Morality as Sentiment
Virtue and vice are distinguished not by reason but by the pleasure or pain they produce in the observer, making moral judgments a matter of feeling.
Skepticism About the External World
The book questions the reality of external objects, arguing that our ideas of extension, solidity, and matter are ultimately derived from perceptions and may lack independent existence.
Custom and General Rules
Habit and custom shape our judgments and passions, leading us to apply general rules that extend beyond immediate experience, influencing pride, morality, and social order.
