He demonstrates his skill by deducing that Watson served in Afghanistan, and later correctly identifies a visitor as a retired sergeant of Marines.

    III: The Lauriston Gardens Mystery

    Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson visit the crime scene at 3, Lauriston Gardens, where the body of Enoch Drebber has been found. Holmes astounds the detectives by deducing details about the murderer from the scene, and he identifies the word 'Rache' as German for 'revenge'. He also demonstrates his deductive skills to Watson by correctly identifying a passerby as a retired sergeant of Marines.

  5. Chapter 5

    IV: What John Rance Had to Tell

    Holmes and Watson interview Constable John Rance about the night of the murder. Holmes deduces details about the cab, the murderer's height, age, and cigar brand, and learns of a drunken man at the scene who Holmes believes is the killer returning for a ring.
