The book exposes the gap between public reputation and private reality, particularly through the sanitized, reverential treatment of Driffield after his death, which erases his unconventional life and first wife, while living characters like Roy Kear maintain a facade of sincerity.

Characters such as Lady Fidget and the 'virtuous gang' publicly uphold honor and chastity while privately pursuing sexual pleasure, exposing the gap between social reputation and actual behavior, a central critique of Restoration society.

Characters like Lady Wishfort and Mrs. Marwood publicly uphold moral standards while privately engaging in deceit and manipulation, underscoring the gap between social performance and true character.
