# Duchess Meg — Zuleika Dobson character guide

> Duchess Meg in Zuleika Dobson by Max Beerbohm.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0007-v

## Snapshot

The Duke's sharp-eyed aunt, whose worldly wit and unshockable affection make her the one confidante he cannot easily dazzle or evade.

## Who they are

As the Duke's aunt, she moves easily through the drawing rooms and dinner tables where his pride is most on display, and she reads him with an accuracy he finds both comforting and inconvenient. Where others see only his icy composure, she suspects the fierce warfare waged behind it, and her dry counsel gives the novel a counterweight of experience to his youthful self-dramatizing. She matters because she is the rare person who can speak plainly to him without being either flattered or dismissed.
