# How does Yashka develop the theme of Gender and War?

> Yashka by Maria Bochkareva

## Answer

Yashka by Maria Bochkareva develops Gender and War across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The book explores the role of women in combat, as Maria Bochkareva defies societal norms by enlisting as a soldier and later forming the Women's Battalion of Death, facing ridicule, skepticism, and the challenge of proving women's capability in warfare.

The Russo-Japanese War brings officers to Maria's town, leading to her seduction and abandonment, highlighting how war disrupts gender roles and exposes women to exploitation.

Maria faces mockery, disbelief, and harassment as a woman attempting to enlist, challenging traditional gender roles in the military.

Maria's presence as a woman in the all-male regiment challenges traditional gender roles; officers initially object but she proves her worth.
