Concepts
Ideas that structure World’s End by Richard Jefferies — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Wealth and Poverty
The book contrasts extreme wealth, embodied by Sternhold Baskette's vast but encumbered property, with the grinding poverty of characters like the Sibbold family and the squatters at World's End, showing how wealth often brings misery and moral decay.
Inheritance and Entitlement
The narrative revolves around the Baskette estate, exploring how inheritance drives conflict, greed, and legal battles, as characters like John Marese Baskette scheme to claim property while others are dispossessed.
Class and Social Mobility
The story examines rigid class structures, from the impoverished farmers at World's End to the rising industrialists and aristocrats, highlighting how characters like Aymer and Marese navigate or are trapped by their social positions.
Madness and Obsession
Sternhold Baskette's monomaniacal pursuit of owning a city drives him to madness, while other characters exhibit obsessive behaviors over wealth, status, or revenge, suggesting that unchecked ambition leads to psychological ruin.
Love and Sacrifice
The romance between Aymer and Violet is tested by poverty, separation, and tragedy, with their love portrayed as a source of resilience against the corrupting forces of wealth and social pressure.
Deception and Corruption
The book is rife with legal trickery, false claims, and moral compromise, as characters like the lawyers Shaw, Shaw, and Simson and the claimants manipulate the system for personal gain, reflecting a corrupt society.
Fate and Circumstance
The narrative emphasizes how characters are shaped by forces beyond their control—such as inheritance laws, economic shifts, and accidents—echoing the theme of 'necessity' as a modern form of ancient fate.
Family and Dysfunction
Dysfunctional family dynamics are central, from the miserly Sibbold and his resentful sons to the Baskettes' fractured lineage, showing how family ties are often sources of conflict rather than support.
