## Who they are

Martin Brown is a sturdy, well-meaning farmer who took in his sister's child and gave him shelter but no money, expecting Aymer to earn his keep among the sheep and ewes. Utterly incapable of understanding a mind absorbed in books rather than turnips, he embodies the narrow, decent world Aymer must escape. His refusal to fund Aymer's reading drives the boy to poaching and book-selling through carriers, setting in motion the self-education that will define Aymer's character and ambitions.
