## Who they are

Albert Herring is a farmer whose losses—dead cattle, ruined crops, a thousand pounds sunk in bad shares—have curdled into bitterness against the Union and its local secretary, Jenkins. He abuses Jenkins endlessly yet keeps him on because the old man is a cheap machine, a cruelty that finally drives Jenkins to a desperate prayer for divine vengeance. When the labourers strike and spread to Belthrop, Albert's fury makes him a face of the farmer's side in a conflict that starves the very men he once employed.
