# Madame Wildenhoff — Women character guide

> Madame Wildenhoff in Women by Zofia Nałkowska.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mme. Wildenhoff, Mme, Wildenhoff

**First appearance:** 0000-i-ice-plains

## Snapshot

The awaited guest whose lateness hangs over the café gathering, a social fixture whose arrival everyone measures the evening by.

## Who they are

Madame Wildenhoff is the appointment the men at the table are waiting on, her name invoked alongside Owinski, his fiancée, and Czolhanski as the reason the evening hasn't properly begun. She never quite arrives in the scene, and that absence is telling: she functions as a social anchor, the kind of woman whose presence organizes an evening's shape before she even appears. Her name carries the weight of the world these characters move in — formal, awaited, slightly withholding.

## In the story

### [II: The “Garden of Red Flowers”](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/women_se/chapters/ii-the-garden-of-red-flowers)

Emancipated and provocative; defends the 'brute-woman' concept, possibly has an intrigue with Imszanski, and orchestrates social situations.
