The Face on the Waterloo Steps
Wolf Solent travels by train from Waterloo to Ramsgard, reflecting on his past, his dismissal from teaching, and his new position as literary assistant to Mr. Urquhart. He contemplates his private 'mythology'—a secret mental practice of sinking into his soul—and wonders if the new reality of Dorset will disrupt his inner world. He also fantasizes about finding a girl to love.
Chapter 4
Christ! I've Had a Happy Life!
Wolf Solent accompanies Selena Gault through Ramsgard, where she reveals his father's dying words and her complex relationship with Wolf's mother. They visit the Abbey, and Wolf reflects on his past and his secret inner life. Later, he travels with Darnley Otter to Pond Cottage, learning about Mr. Urquhart and the Otter family while contemplating the Vale of Blackmore and his own 'mythology.'
Chapter 5
A Dorset Chronicle
Wolf Solent dines with Mr. Urquhart, who outlines his vision for a 'Dorset Chronicle'—a selective, Rabelaisian history focused on pithy human events. Urquhart's cynical views on religion and his manipulative demeanor unsettle Wolf, who senses a deep moral antagonism. After a tense exchange, Wolf leaves and returns to Pond Cottage, where he finds a mysterious man in his room.
