## Who they are

Tugai Bey commands the Crimean Tartars whose cavalry gives Hmelnitski's uprising its terrifying reach across the steppe. He treats war as trade: he haggles over Skshetuski's ransom with the calm of a merchant, raising his price the moment he senses how badly Hmelnitski wants the Pole. His alliance with the Cossacks is purely transactional, and his presence in the early councils shows how many separate hungers — Cossack, Tartar, noble — are converging on the Ukraine.
