# Kanga — Winnie-the-Pooh character guide

> Kanga in Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0009-vii-in-which-kanga-and-baby-roo-come-to-the-forest-and-piglet-has-a-bath

## Snapshot

A cheerful kangaroo mother whose unbuttoned pocket is both nursery and hiding place, and who answers a kidnapping with bath-time jokes instead of alarm.

## Who they are

Kanga presides over the Forest's one domestic hearth, raising Baby Roo with brisk cheerfulness and an unshakeable belief that Christopher Robin will let no real harm come to anyone. When Rabbit tries to steal Roo and leave Piglet in his place, she spots the swap at once — yet rather than scold, she decides that if they are having a joke with her, she will have a joke with them, and calmly proposes a cold bath. Her composure turns a prank into a lesson about how the Forest's rough games look from a mother's side, quietly widening the book's sense of who belongs to whom.
