First appearance: Adventure
As a supporting figure in Winesburg, Ohio, Alice Hindman is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Alice is the central figure of the chapter, a woman who has spent years waiting for Ned Currie's return, grappling with loneliness and the fear that her youth has passed.
Alice Hindman gives herself to Ned Currie before he leaves for Cleveland, and she holds to the idea of him long after he has stopped writing. As she reaches twenty-five and then twenty-seven, she joins the Methodist church and the Epworth League less from faith than from fear of her own isolation. Her loyalty becomes a trap, and her growing restlessness pushes her toward a crisis that exposes how thoroughly Winesburg's quiet has failed her.
