## Who they are

Sugg is the official police presence on the Battersea body case, a man whose pince-nez, snorts, and masterly inactivity make him the perfect foil to Wimsey's amateur meddling. He genuinely believes he has solved the crime by arresting Alfred Thipps, and he guards Queen Caroline Mansions with a Cerberus-like refusal to admit unofficial inquirers. His stubborn wrongness raises the stakes early: if Wimsey cannot out-think him, an innocent man hangs, and the real killer walks.
