Chapter 1
The Trail of the Meat
Two men, Henry and Bill, travel through a frozen, desolate wilderness with a sled carrying a coffin. They are pursued by a pack of wolves, which they suspect has infiltrated their dog team. The chapter establishes the harshness of the Wild and the men's growing unease as they camp for the night, surrounded by gleaming wolf eyes.
Chapter 2
II: The She-Wolf
Bill and Henry continue their journey through the frozen wilderness, now with only three dogs after losing three to the wolf pack. The she-wolf, a cunning and elusive creature, stalks them relentlessly, stealing food and killing dogs. Bill becomes increasingly despondent and fearful, while Henry tries to maintain morale. The she-wolf's intelligence and boldness are highlighted as she approaches the camp and even evades a shot from Bill. The chapter ends with the men feeling trapped and desperate.
Chapter 3
III: The Hunger Cry
Henry and Bill struggle to survive a relentless wolf pack. After losing One Ear to the she-wolf's lure, Bill attempts to rescue the dog but is killed. Henry endures a harrowing night, fighting off wolves with fire, and is rescued at dawn by a sled party.
Chapter 4
The Battle of the Fangs
The chapter depicts the brutal dynamics of a wolf pack driven by hunger and mating instincts. The she-wolf attracts two rival leaders, and after a fierce battle, the one-eyed elder kills the younger leader and wins her. They pair off, hunt together, and eventually the pack breaks up as the she-wolf seeks a den.
Chapter 5
The Lair
The she-wolf and One Eye leave the Indian camp after a near-miss with a rifle. The she-wolf, heavy with cubs, finds a cave under a claybank where she gives birth to five cubs. One Eye hunts but returns empty-handed, and upon discovering the newborn cubs, he is driven by instinct to leave and hunt for food, encountering a porcupine.
