  1. Chapter 1

    When God Laughs

Carquinez visits the narrator in his bungalow during a storm, and over wine they discuss satiety, desire, and the futility of trying to outwit the gods. Carquinez recounts the story of Marvin Fiske and his wife, who attempted to preserve their love by never kissing, only to find desire dead anyway. The chapter explores the theme that possession and satiety kill desire, and that humans never truly win against the gods.

  2. Chapter 2

    The Apostate

Johnny, a young boy, is forced awake by his mother to work at the jute mill. He endures a grim morning routine and a long walk to the factory, where he performs repetitive, exhausting labor. After collapsing from exhaustion, he is sent home, and later he leaves the city, lying in a field and eventually climbing into an empty boxcar, smiling in the darkness.

  3. Chapter 3

    A Wicked Woman

Loretta visits Santa Clara to escape Billy, who wants to marry her. She stays with the Hemingways, where Ned Bashford, a philosophical man, becomes enamored with her apparent innocence. Loretta confesses to Ned that she is 'wicked' because of her past with Billy, leading to a tense revelation.

  4. Chapter 4

    Just Meat

After a successful burglary, partners Matt and Jim divide a fortune in stolen gems. Their mutual suspicion and greed quickly surface, leading each to secretly plot against the other. Jim poisons Matt's coffee, but Matt has already poisoned Jim's. Both men die in agony, their bodies reduced to 'just meat.'

  5. Chapter 5

    Created He Them

George Burrell arrives to take his brother Al to a sanatorium under Doctor Bodineau's care. After a moment of crisis, Al relents and agrees to go, but George catches him drinking whiskey before they leave.
