# How does When Charles the First Was King develop the theme of Social Class and Hierarchy?

> When Charles the First Was King by J. S. Fletcher

## Answer

When Charles the First Was King by J. S. Fletcher develops Social Class and Hierarchy across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The story reflects rigid social structures of 17th-century England, with clear distinctions between gentry, farmers, and servants like Jacob Trusty, yet also shows bonds of loyalty and respect across classes.

Two separate entertainments are held for labourers and gentry, and Will's role as master of the estate is emphasized in Jacob's speech.

Debates over the rights of the people versus the divine right of kings reflect tensions between social classes and political authority.

Ben Tuckett, a tradesman, navigates between Royalist and Parliamentarian factions, highlighting class dynamics in wartime.
