## Who they are

U- is the matronly controller of D-503's building, all brown freckles and innocent gestures, who notices he looks abnormal and ill and tells him no one else would say so. Her kindness is genuine but her role is surveillance: she reads the stub that points to I-330, and her word 'no one' lands like a warning. She embodies the One State's softest face, the way care and spying are the same gesture, and her presence keeps D-503's private rebellion under constant, gentle watch.
