## Who they are

O-90 is the soft, obedient counterweight to I-330: a Number who follows the rules, loves simply, and longs for a child the State may not permit her to have. When D-503 uses her as a shield against the Guardians and then abandons her on a street corner, her quiet suffering exposes the cost of his awakening. She matters because she shows what the One State's happiness actually looks like when it is denied, and what D-503 is willing to sacrifice for something he cannot name.
