Book Summary
When Chief Ranger Asaki seeks help against a witch doctor using murderous magic, the crew of the Solar Queen travels to the planet Khatka. Medic Tau must confront the sorcerer Lumbrilo in a battle of wits and will, navigating treacherous jungles and psychic illusions to save a world from corruption.
Chief Ranger Asaki visits the starship Solar Queen and recruits Captain Jellico, Medic Tau, and Dane Thorson to help him on Khatka, where a witch doctor named Lumbrilo is using killing magic against key officials. Upon arrival, Tau challenges Lumbrilo in a display of power, summoning an elephant vision, which prompts Asaki to openly seek Tau's aid. The group flies to the Zoboru preserve, but their flitter crashes in a magnetic region. They survive attacks by rock apes and discover a death pit. As they journey through the wilderness, they realize Lumbrilo has been drugging their water to induce mass hallucinations, causing them to fight phantom enemies. Trapped between mountains and swamp, they endure a graz stampede and flee into treacherous bogs. They find a poacher camp and plan an assault. In the climax, Tau engages Lumbrilo in a psychic duel, transforming into beasts and turning the witch doctor's own magic against him by summoning shadow lions. Lumbrilo breaks and flees, and Tau collapses from exhaustion. The crew captures the poachers, restoring order and exposing the corruption that threatened Khatka.
