Chapter 1
Bretton

Chapter 3
The Playmates

Miss Marchmont
Lucy Snowe leaves Bretton and returns home, only to face a period of hardship and loss. She becomes the companion to the rheumatic and eccentric Miss Marchmont, who recounts the tragic story of her lover Frank's death on Christmas Eve thirty years prior. On a stormy night, Miss Marchmont experiences a vivid revival of her memories and dies, leaving Lucy alone and prompting her to seek a new life abroad.
Chapter 5
V: Turning a New Leaf
After Miss Marchmont's death, Lucy Snowe finds herself alone and must seek new employment. With fifteen pounds saved, she visits an old family servant, Mrs. Barrett, for advice. Inspired by the sight of the Aurora Borealis, she resolves to go to London. She travels to the city, stays at an old inn, and overcomes initial loneliness and uncertainty, finding solace in the shadow of St. Paul's.
