# Lottie Crump — Vile Bodies character guide

> Lottie Crump in Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Crump, Mrs. Crump

**First appearance:** 0003-i

## Snapshot

Lottie Crump presides over Shepheard's Hotel, where deposed kings, confused judges, and thirsty Bright Young People drink champagne on someone else's tab.

## Who they are

Lottie runs her parlour as a democratic haven for anyone with a title or a thirst, greeting Adam with cheerful misremembered names and an ex-King of Ruritania in the corner. She has a weak spot for royalty and an equitable instinct for making the richest guest pay for everyone's wine. Her hotel is the novel's recurring stage, a place where social chaos is warmly hosted and nobody is ever quite turned away.
