Chapter 3
Vile Bodies
Adam Fenwick-Symes arrives in England after a rough channel crossing, only to have his autobiographical manuscript seized by customs. He then attends a series of wild parties, including Archie Schwert's savage party where Flossie dies on a chandelier, and Lady Metroland's party for Mrs. Melrose Ape. Amidst the chaos, Simon Balcairn commits suicide, and Adam takes on the identity of Mr. Chatterbox. The chapter satirizes the hedonistic and morally vacuous Bright Young People, blending media spectacle, violence, and farcical romance.
Chapter 4
I
The chapter opens on a rough Channel crossing from France to England. Among the passengers are Mrs. Melrose Ape and her angels, the Bright Young People (including Miss Runcible and Miles Malpractice), two tipsy old ladies (Lady Throbbing and Mrs. Blackwater), and the Jesuit Father Rothschild. Adam Fenwick-Symes boards at the last moment, returning from Paris after writing a book and getting engaged. Mrs. Ape leads the seasick passengers in a hymn, collecting money afterward. Father Rothschild warns Adam about Mrs. Ape and mentions a future meeting at Lady Metroland's.
Chapter 5
Chapter II
Adam Fenwick-Symes, after his manuscript is burned by customs, telephones his fiancée Nina Blount to break the news that he cannot marry her. They agree to meet later at Archie Schwert's party. Adam then visits his publisher Sam Benfleet, who cancels the original contract and offers a much less favorable standard first-novel contract. Later, Adam travels with Miss Runcible and the Younger Set, discussing the outrageous customs incident and the upcoming party.
