Chapter 1
Epigraph
The chapter presents two epigraphs: a quote from Lamartine criticizing fables for diminishing humanity, nature, and God, and a verse from the Rig-Veda about perception, understanding, and the paradoxical nature of wisdom.
Chapter 2
Dedication
The author dedicates the book to his uncle, Robert Bagshaw of Dovercourt, with affection, noting that the tales will remind him of a land he knows well.
Chapter 3
Vikram and the Vampire
The opening chapter introduces Raja Vikram and his encounter with the Baital, a vampire-like being, setting the stage for a series of tales within a frame story.
Chapter 4
The Vampire's First Story
Prince Vajramukut, while hunting, encounters Princess Padmavati at a forest tank and falls in love. With the help of his friend, he devises a plan to win her. A yogi (actually the friend in disguise) falsely accuses Padmavati of witchcraft, leading her father King Dantawat to banish her. Vajramukut rescues her and they marry. The Baital asks who is most to blame; Vikram judges King Dantawat as most at fault.
Chapter 5
The Vampire's Second Story
The Baital tells a story about Prince Raja Ram, who inherits a wise parrot named Churaman. The parrot helps restore the prince's fortunes and advises him on choosing a wife. The tale explores the relative villainy of men and women through debates between the parrot and a jay named Madan-manjari, and includes a sub-story about Ratnawati, a beautiful and obedient daughter who marries an ugly hunchback and comes to love him. The Baital's commentary provokes Raja Vikram's anger, leading to another capture.
