## Who they are

The Giaour arrives at Vathek's court as a merchant of exotic wares, but his true commodity is temptation: he alone can satisfy the Caliph's restless curiosity for things beyond mortal knowledge. Where Vathek's five palaces of pleasure have failed to sate him, this stranger offers darker promises — power, secrets, and a journey no caliph has dared take. He is the hinge on which the story's descent turns, and every bargain struck with him costs more than it appears.
