## Snapshot

One of Doctor Minoret's grasping relatives, she wears piety like armor while her eyes stay fixed on the inheritance she believes is rightfully hers.

## Who they are

Madame Massin belongs to the constellation of Minoret's provincial heirs, each convinced that the old doctor's fortune should flow to them rather than to a ward of obscure birth. Her religiosity and respectable manners mask a calculating nature, and she watches Ursule with the cold appraisal of a woman tallying what she stands to lose. As part of the collective pressure on Minoret's household, she embodies the petty greed that Balzac sees as the true religion of the provinces.
