Ideas that structure Unto This Last by John Ruskin — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Critique of Classical Political Economy
Ruskin systematically attacks the foundations of classical political economy, arguing that it falsely treats humans as mere 'covetous machines' and ignores the essential role of moral and social affections in economic life.
Justice Over Expediency
The book argues that economic and social relations must be governed by justice, not by calculations of expediency or self-interest, asserting that justice is the only true basis for a healthy society and economy.
True Nature of Wealth
Ruskin redefines wealth as 'the possession of useful articles that avail towards life,' distinguishing it from mere monetary accumulation and arguing that real wealth is tied to human well-being and moral purpose.
Moral Dimensions of Labor
The book emphasizes that labor is not merely a commodity but involves the whole human being, including emotions, skill, and moral character, and that the relationship between employer and employee should be based on mutual affection and duty.
Inequality and Power
Ruskin explores how wealth is fundamentally about power over others, and that the pursuit of riches often involves creating and maintaining inequality, which can be either just or unjust depending on its methods and purposes.
