Bunter is Wimsey's indispensable right hand — photographer, tail, and keeper of the flat's quiet order. His pursuit of the crimson-hatted woman through Liverpool ends in rare defeat, and his mortified, exquisitely phrased confession is one of the book's small comedies. Yet his failure is itself evidence: it proves the quarry was careful, deliberate, and expecting to be followed, which sharpens the case against Mary Whittaker before a single arrest is possible.
