Uncle Henry is the still center of Putney Farm, a man of few words who butters bread with a grave face while a conspiracy of laughter builds around him. He feeds Shep tidbits through Betsy's hands and marches out to milk early when bad news arrives, his head hanging. His patient, undramatic steadiness gives Betsy room to try things — dogs, chores, courage — and his quiet laugh at the dinner table is one of the first sounds of home she ever really hears.
