Concepts
Ideas that structure Under Western Eyes by Joseph Conrad — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Psychology of Russia
The book is an attempt to render the psychology of Russia itself, exploring the Russian temperament under the pressure of tyrannical lawlessness, characterized by senseless desperation and a spirit of cynicism in both autocracy and revolt.
Betrayal and Guilt
Razumov's betrayal of the revolutionary Haldin to the authorities drives the narrative, leading to profound psychological torment, guilt, and a desperate need for confession and redemption.
Revolution vs. Autocracy
The conflict between oppressive autocratic rule and Utopian revolutionary ideals is central, with both sides depicted as morally corrupt—the former through lawlessness, the latter through fanaticism and hypocrisy.
Isolation and Identity
Razumov, as an illegitimate orphan, feels deeply isolated and defines his identity through being Russian; his lack of family ties makes him vulnerable and heightens his struggle for belonging and purpose.
Western vs. Eastern Perspective
The story is filtered through the 'Western Eyes' of an English teacher of languages, highlighting the incomprehensibility of Russian character and politics to Western observers, and the clash of rational versus mystical worldviews.
The Cost of Idealism
Idealistic characters like Victor Haldin and his sister Nathalie pursue noble aspirations for freedom and justice, but their trust and devotion lead to betrayal, suffering, and disillusionment, showing the tragic consequences of idealism in a corrupt society.
Truth and Falsehood
The novel explores the power of lies and self-deception, as Razumov constructs a false revolutionary identity, only to be ultimately undone by the need to confess the truth and betray himself back into 'truth and peace.'
The Role of Women
Women are portrayed as morally superior and spiritually strong figures, such as Nathalie Haldin and the heroic girl who gives the file, embodying self-sacrifice, indomitable will, and the hope for Russia's future.
