Chapter 1
In Which the Reader Is Introduced to a Man of Humanity
Mr. Shelby, a Kentucky slaveholder, is forced by debt to negotiate with the slave trader Haley over the sale of two slaves: the faithful Tom and the young boy Harry. Eliza, Harry's mother, overhears part of the conversation and becomes anxious, but Mrs. Shelby reassures her that no sale will occur. The chapter introduces the Shelby household, the moral conflict of slavery, and the precariousness of enslaved families under the law.
Chapter 2
II: The Mother
This chapter introduces Eliza, a beautiful quadroon slave raised as a favored servant by her mistress, and her husband George Harris, a talented mulatto slave who invented a hemp-cleaning machine. An Evening in Uncle Tom's Cabin
