A Preliminary Word

Chapter 4

The chapter introduces the arrival of Doctor Bryerly, a Swedenborgian, whose mysterious visit and strange interaction with Maud's father unsettle her. Later, Austin shows Maud a locked cabinet and a special key, hinting at secrets he intends to entrust to her.
Chapter 5
Uncle Silas
Maud reflects on her father's mysterious references to Uncle Silas, a handsome but enigmatic figure from a portrait, and her father's cryptic plans for a journey with an unnamed friend. He decides she needs a governess and instructs her to show a key only to Dr. Bryerly. Maud's curiosity about Uncle Silas grows, but her father and servants avoid discussing him.
