## Who they are

Lenehan is the city's living connective tissue: he knows every horse, every debt, every rumor, and he trades them for pints and attention. His patter is relentless and often funny, but it masks a man perpetually on the make, hustling for shillings and a place at the bar. Through his restless rounds he stitches together Dublin's scattered talkers, giving the novel a voice for its gossipy, sideways-talking streets.
