Ideas that structure Ukridge Stories by P. G. Wodehouse — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Get-Rich-Quick Schemes
The central theme of the book, as Ukridge constantly devises elaborate, improbable plans to make a fortune—such as training dogs for the stage, starting an accident syndicate, or selling a biography—only to have them fail or backfire humorously.
Friendship and Loyalty
The narrator's enduring, often exasperated friendship with Ukridge is a core thread, with Ukridge repeatedly borrowing money, stealing clothes, and dragging his friend into schemes, yet the bond persists through shared history and mutual affection.
Poverty and Impecunity
Ukridge and his circle are perpetually broke, relying on loans, pawning items, and sponging off others, which drives much of the comedy and plot as they scramble for money.
Social Class and Appearances
The stories satirize Edwardian social conventions, with Ukridge's shabby clothes and bohemian lifestyle clashing with the expectations of wealthy aunts, formal dinners, and respectable society.
Optimism and Resilience
Despite constant failures, Ukridge remains irrepressibly optimistic, bouncing back from each disaster with a new scheme and a cheerful belief that fortune is just around the corner.
Romance and Marriage
Romantic entanglements appear in several stories, such as Ukridge's ill-fated love for Mabel (ruined by a top hat) and his chivalrous efforts to help Dora Mason, often complicating his schemes.
Deception and Manipulation
Ukridge frequently uses charm, bluster, and outright lies to manipulate friends, creditors, and relatives, whether to borrow money, avoid debts, or advance his plans.
The Absurdity of Modern Life
The stories highlight the absurdities of Edwardian London—from newspaper insurance schemes to dog-training colleges—using farcical situations to mock the era's fads and pretensions.
