Concepts
Ideas that structure Typee by Herman Melville — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Civilization vs. Nature
The book contrasts the perceived artificiality, stress, and moral corruption of civilized society with the simplicity, health, and happiness of the natural life led by the Typees, though this idyllic view is complicated by the discovery of cannibalism.
Freedom and Captivity
The narrator escapes the oppressive life of a whaling ship only to find himself a captive in the Typee valley, torn between the physical freedom of the island and his desire to return to his own world.
Cultural Relativism
Melville challenges Western assumptions of superiority by portraying the Typees as a peaceful, moral, and well-ordered society, while criticizing the destructive impact of European colonialism and missionary work.
Colonialism and Its Effects
The narrative critiques the destructive influence of European and French colonial powers on Pacific islanders, including the introduction of disease, vice, and social disruption, contrasting it with the untouched state of the Typees.
The Idealized Primitive
The Typee valley is depicted as a utopia free from money, law, class conflict, and emotional distress, embodying a romanticized vision of the 'noble savage' that is both admired and questioned.
Taboo and Social Order
The mysterious and all-powerful system of 'Taboo' governs every aspect of Typee life, serving as a substitute for written law and illustrating how social order can be maintained through custom and belief.
Cannibalism and the Other
The threat and eventual discovery of cannibalism among the Typees serves as the ultimate test of the narrator's romanticized view, forcing a confrontation with the savage reality that underlies the idyllic surface.
Gender Roles and Sexuality
The book explores the fluid and unconventional gender dynamics of the Typees, including polyandry, the taboo restricting women from canoes, and the narrator's romanticized relationship with Fayaway.
