A handsome, tattooed traveler who moves between hostile tribes under the protection of taboo, and whose freedom the captive narrator can only envy.

## Who they are

Marnoo arrives in the valley as a kind of living exception — a man who belongs everywhere and nowhere, shielded by taboo from the wars that divide the islands. He is admired by the Typees, at ease among strangers, and utterly unlike the narrator, who is admired but not free. His comings and goings sharpen the narrator's sense of his own confinement, and his ambiguous status raises the question of what safety in this world actually costs.
