**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Dr. Hamilton

**First appearance:** 0010-vii-some-early-undertakings-at-hull-house

## Snapshot

A physician who traded a conventional practice for Halsted Street, she turned her microscope on the poisons that industry quietly fed to working people.

## Who they are

Dr. Hamilton belongs to the first generation of Hull House residents, one of the women who made the settlement a base for expert, unsentimental reform rather than charity. Her distinctive contribution is scientific: she investigates the trades that maim their workers and insists that evidence, not pity, should drive the law. That instinct — to look closely at what everyone else has agreed not to see — is what makes her central to the book's widening argument that compassion must be organized, informed, and persistent.
