Chapter 1
Act I

Chapter 2
Scene I
Duke Orsino, surrounded by musicians, indulges in the music of love, expressing his desire for excess to sicken his appetite. Curio suggests hunting, but Orsino compares his love for Olivia to being hunted by his own desires. Valentine returns with news that Olivia will mourn her brother for seven years, refusing to be seen. Orsino marvels at her devotion and resolves to dwell on love.
Chapter 3
Scene II
Viola, shipwrecked on the coast of Illyria, learns from the Captain that her brother may have survived. She hears of Duke Orsino's love for the mourning Olivia and decides to disguise herself as a eunuch to serve Orsino.
Chapter 4
Scene III
Sir Toby Belch and Maria discuss Olivia's mourning and Sir Toby's late-night carousing. Maria criticizes Sir Andrew Aguecheek as a foolish prodigal, but Sir Toby defends him. Sir Andrew arrives, and after a series of misunderstandings and wordplay, Maria departs. Sir Andrew considers leaving, but Sir Toby persuades him to stay, and they plan revels.
Chapter 5
Scene IV: The Duke's Commission
Duke Orsino, having taken a liking to his new page Cesario (Viola in disguise), entrusts him with the mission of wooing Olivia on his behalf. Despite Viola's reservations about Olivia's mourning and her own secret love for Orsino, she agrees to undertake the task, revealing her inner conflict.
