## Who they are

Gharlane is not a villain who schemes in a single lifetime but a presence that wears bodies and eras like clothing, moving pieces on the four planets over centuries. The Eddorians' mechanistic logic and hunger for dominance stand against the Arisians' long watch, and Gharlane is the instrument of that cold, patient ambition. He matters because he is the hidden hand behind the disasters that shape the book's history, the reason the Service's battles are never merely local.
