## Who they are

Marcial is the household's resident ancient mariner, intimate enough to walk into Don Alonso's room mid-argument and answer Doña Francisca's insults with cheerful impudence. He has lost limbs in Spain's wars and gained an inexhaustible stock of yarns, which he deploys to entertain, to instruct, and to keep his own spirits afloat. His presence links the parlor to the fleet, and his stubborn good humor in the face of horror gives the novel one of its most vivid counterpoints to despair.
