## Who they are

Rosita is the young woman at the center of the Cádiz household's emotional life, pale and hollow-eyed from the anguish of waiting for news from Trafalgar. When the page mistakenly announces Don Rafael's death, she faints, and the household erupts in lamentation — only for Don José María to burst in with the truth that the wound was trivial. Her love for Rafael and her vulnerability to rumor make her the barometer of the novel's domestic stakes, and her eventual marriage to the young officer closes the arc that the false death report had nearly shattered.
