## Who they are

Gravina commands the Spanish fleet at Trafalgar, a gentleman and brave sailor whose merits the narrator judges to have been exaggerated by a grieving nation. Too much the courtier to show the immovable determination of a Churruca or Galiano, he lacks the scientific mastery that naval command at this scale requires. His limitations matter because they help explain, from inside the Spanish account, why the combined fleet was led into catastrophe — and why the men who died deserved better than their leaders.
