# Flora de Cisniega — Trafalgar character guide

> Flora de Cisniega in Trafalgar by Benito Pérez Galdós.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Flora, Doña Flora

**First appearance:** 0000-i

## Snapshot

A plump, painted gossip who runs a Cádiz salon where war news and patriotic bluster are traded like chocolate and cakes.

## Who they are

Doña Flora is the aging, richly dressed hostess whose drawing-room serves as the novel's clearinghouse for political rumor and naval enthusiasm, her patriotic fervor a substitute for the romance her fifty years deny her. She despises Doña Francisca's pacific timidity and eggs Don Alonso on toward the fleet, symbolizing in her person the giddy, gunpowder-fed nationalism that sent men to Trafalgar. Her salon and her chatter matter because they show how the disaster was prepared not only at sea but in the drawing-rooms of Cádiz.
